Hospis Malaysia Volunteer Introduction Section

Members of the Rotaract Club of Pudu and several interactors under the wing of the Rotary Club of Pudu attended a volunteer introductory session at Hospis Malaysia on Saturday the 19th of September. The objective of the session was to know of Hospis Malaysia’s role and what palliative care is all about.

The briefing session was done by Dr Ednin Hamzah, the medical director of Hospis Malaysia. Hospis Malaysia is a non-profit organization that provides palliative care to patients diagnosed with terminal illness. According to Dr Ednin, apart from medicine to treat the underlying disease, something must be done to treat the emotional, social and spiritual aspects of suffering from a terminal illness. This is where palliative care comes in to improve patients’ quality of life. By providing palliative care, patients are able to prepare for the end by making decisions as well as receiving support from their own friends and family.

In addition to that, Hospis Malaysia is also running a petition to gather support to establish palliative care units in all hospitals in Malaysia. It is hoped that 10,000 signatures are achieved to send in the petition.

The hospice requires volunteers for events and also for certain patient care activities. To anyone who is interested, kindly contact Hospis Malaysia at 03-9133 3936 or email them at info@hospismalaysia.org for further details.
